Small Man of Nanataki: The true story of a Japanese who risked h ( Ankuru Jon to Yobareta Otoko )

Liam Nolan

Biography. This is the moving, true story of Kiyoshi Watanabe, a Japanese Lutheran pastor who had studied in the US where he was called "John." He was drafted into the Japanese army and assigned as an interpreter in the Shamshui Po prisoner of war camp in Hong Kong where he was horrified by the cruelty. As a Christian he had to help the prisoners, who called him "Uncle John." At great personal danger he smuggled medicine to them, gave up part of his own rations and was unfailingly kind. His wife and oldest daughter were killed by the atomic bomb at Hiroshima. Written by an Irish journalist. 285 pages. Forest Books imprint.
