In Urakawa, Hokkaido, a model community called Bethel Home started in 1984. It is a group of nearly 150 people with psychiatric disabilities ranging in age from teens to 70's from all over Japan, with 20 caretaker staff members. Their own company sells local products (seaweed, crafts, etc.) to provide work experience for themselves and contribute to the local town. Bethel Home receives 2000 annual visitors, including news media and has been the subject of research by Yale University. 192 pp.
